FROM THE PRESIDENT
Some
wanderings from your President:
Let’s
begin with a big thank you to Joann Quinn who served with fine
leadership over the past year and previously. Also thank you to
Lou and Mary Trostel who continue to be central PAS leaders and
graciously hosted the annual meeting on September 12th. We
had a strong turnout, and we’re ready to take on new artistic
adventures together. Another part of the PAS backbone is Jean
Murphy who tirelessly organizes events, volunteers and leads by
example. Jean and the portrait group roll on and keep growing
stronger. They meet every Tuesday morning from 9-12 at the Center.
This group includes highly accomplished artists along with novices.
Merry and Bud Pratt have moved to West Boylston, and stepped back
from their leadership positions. Their contributions and dedication
over many years have helped set the PAS tone. Our thoughts go
out to Dick Whitney who is dealing with some health problems.
Dick is always the energy and life of the meetings. He brings
humor and talent and a soulful laugh. Last season he offered a
workshop on his caricature woodcarvings. Many members have received
these special gifts from Dick. Move over Honore Daumier. Get well
Dick, we need you back.
We
all missed the warm presence of Steve Breen. Steve’s untimely
death sent ripples throughout our art world and the Princeton
Community. He was our fabulous local framer – The No Name
Frame Shop. Steve was always ready to help any out at any time.
An accomplished artist who graduated from Clark University, he
was in the final year of a wonderful Worcester Public School art
teaching career. Steve always brought a sense of wonder and excitement
to the classroom where students loved him. Steve and Judy are
two quiet community leaders who could always be found organizing
volunteers at Hey Day, The Congregational Church, The Princeton
Arts Council, Girl Scouts, to name a few. Steve also served as
the PAS president. His humor, friendship, and arts expertise were
treasured by all.
Your
board of directors eagerly serves you and the community well.
Please note how far the membership extends geographically. We
have many talented artists and arts lovers working hard to keep
this organization vital and reflective of our shared values.
A
tip of the hat and reminder that PAS began as a vision of Cathy
and Paul Kalinien back in the early 1990’s. We have weathered
storms and celebrated the power of the arts to build, to heal
and to transform society with positive energy and beauty. The
current storm includes financial challenges as rent and fuel costs
have risen dramatically. We will continue to serve and to give
back to the community. So what is going on? To raise funds and
offer artist workshops, several members will be offering mini-course
workshops, around 4 sessions at about $80 per course. At least
40% will support PAS. The portrait group has conducted a portrait
sketch of children through adult and 50% of the proceeds go back
to PAS.
Another
cost saving venture is “email instead of postcards”
option. If you have reliable email, please check off that you
will receive mailings through email only. Save on postage.
Great news, we have prints of local artists work to sell. These
will be presented at the Princeton Public Library in time for
Winter gift-giving and eventually be posted on the website for
your perusal. Pass the word, and write the check for a great gift
or surprise.
Finally,
Beth Mellor has stepped up and become our webmaster. If you want
your arts-related website to be linked, send us your contact information,
artists statement, and any images you'd like presented on the
site. We will also link to your art-related website so please
include an exact legible web address. Different members’
work will be featured on the site from time to time.
Let’s
have another great year.
